About Ying E Chi & Hong Kong On Screen

About Ying E Chi and Hong Kong On Screen

Ying E Chi was founded in 1997, the year of Hong Kong’s handover.  Since its inception, it has been committed to uniting local independent filmmakers and promoting Hong Kong independent cinema through theatrical screenings, DVD and online distribution, as well as thematic curation and programming.

Since 2008, Ying E Chi has organized the Hong Kong Independent Film Festival, showcasing significant independent works from both Hong Kong and around the world, while actively supporting emerging filmmakers.  Over the years, it has become a vital platform for Hong Kong’s independent film culture.

In 2021, public funding from relevant government bodies was abruptly terminated, making it difficult for Ying E Chi to maintain daily operations and sustain the film festival.  Eventually, the organization was forced to cease its activities.

In 2022, with the founding of Hong Kong On Screen in Los Angeles, a close partnership began between the two entities. Several Ying E Chi productions or recommended works were screened, including Inside the Red Brick Wall (2020), Taking Back the Legislature (2020), and the short film compilation Keep Rolling (2022), which captured life in Hong Kong under the pandemic. That same year, we launched A Campaign to Support Ying E Chi, aiming to rally overseas audiences and communities in support of the survival and continuation of Hong Kong’s independent cinema.

From October to November 2023, Hong Kong On Screen hosted the online program HKOS Indie Film Online Showcase, highlighting the work of director Vincent Chui, including 3 Narrow Gates (2009), Leaving in Sorrow (2001), and Fig (2013).  Keep Rolling (2022) was also re-screened and received an enthusiastic response from audiences.

In the fall of 2024, Artistic Director Vincent Chui relaunched Ying E Chi in Taiwan under his name and announced the inaugural Hong Kong Independent Short Film Award 2025, aiming to provide a platform for emerging filmmakers to showcase their work and gain recognition.

In 2025, Hong Kong On Screen is honored to be one of five global partners selected to host the Hong Kong Independent Short Film Award Finalists Touring Showcase.  We proudly present 11 short films by a new generation of Hong Kong filmmakers, spanning documentary, experimental, narrative, and animation.  These works not only demonstrate the creative passion of young artists but also reflect their unwavering independent voices in a climate of constrained expression, offering timely and resonant responses to the realities of contemporary Hong Kong.

❝ What I hope to do most is to carry forward what we’ve built, even after leaving Hong Kong — to keep it alive, and continue bringing it to audiences.❞
— Vincent Chui
